Linear to rotary wire converter

Design & function

The linear motion of a flexible steel cable up to 60 meters long is converted into rotational motion. The measuring drum is connected to the shaft of a rotary encoder. Pulling out the measuring cable causes the encoder shaft to rotate proportionally, which can be recorded.

A spring keeps the measuring cable under constant tension, preventing sagging that would otherwise cause measurement errors. The measuring drum moves axially on a spindle, allowing the cable to be accurately and reproducibly wound and unwound, coil by coil, within the drum's spiral groove.

The cable entrance is protected with a brush and a bellows to prevent water or dust from entering the drum.
